Coming from parents who didn't invest in my creativity - herding me to safer pastures - I think I became more creative because they seemed to indirectly suppress my self expression. It may have made my creative roots dig deeper and grow stronger. Their opinions ceased to matter after I stopped seeking their approval of my creativity.
This is an interesting take. I've seen a lot of people stymied when parents don't approve, but I hadn't thought of the case where someone like you finds more creative freedom (and "permission" to be creative) simply in the act of pushing away.
