It seems that good nonfiction (namely Big Idea) follows some of your beats ideas. A strong narratve, hooks, reader fascination, rising tension, unsolvable problems, crisis, climax, etc.

And the research doesn't solve everything, but might go off in unexpected directions.

While the worst non-fiction is outlined within an inch, boringly so.

Even a decent podcast has unexpected twists and reveals.
